Something magical happens when we move.  We pack up our old home and unpack into our new one. Sounds simple. But what we are really doing in this process is leaving unnecessary clutter behind. As we unpack, we are allowing a fresh start. The storage spaces are empty, and the rooms are a blank canvas. But why should we only experience that joy when we move?  Maybe it’s time to take a “new owner” look at your home again!  Here are some ideas to get you started!

1. Begin at your front door. Yes, put on your shoes, walk outside, and turn around. What do you see? Home Sweet Home? Or is it time to finally replace the doorknob? The doorbell? Does the door need paint? Simple flowers for color?  Make any notes, then proceed inside!

2. Go directly to the Utility Room. When we buy our homes, we have good intentions to keep everything in this room well-maintained. We nod with enthusiasm when the inspector tells us just how to change the furnace filter, the softener salt, etc. It’s time to get back on a schedule. What else in here could use some attention? See any leaks?  Create a list. (And change the filter!)

3. Head to the storage area. Take a serious look at what is here. For some reason we hold on to more than we need until a move. Now is the time to toss the broken chair, the ripped sleeping bag or the worn-out toys. Or maybe build the shelves you envisioned in this space since the day you moved in!

4. Circle around to your bathrooms. Most of our buyers tackle these first. And not always a major remodel! Simple accents like new lighting, a new toilet, even a new cleaning wand and waste basket make the list. Look closely. What will make these bathrooms sparkle again?

5. Walk to the kitchen. As a new owner, you likely organized the pans and utensils with pride. Take an afternoon, or one drawer or shelf at a time. Toss expired spices, throw out the old condiment packets. Finally, look at the sink and underneath it. Any leaks or anything that looks questionable?  If you always wanted to replace the sprayer, maybe now’s a good time to treat yourself!

Final Step: Make some cookies and go (re) introduce yourself to your neighbors! Welcome Home!
