Giving Beyond the Holidays: A Lesson to Learn

The music has been turned off, the hot chocolate and cookie stand put away, the parking lot is empty. The crowd has gotten home by now, warmed up, cozy and ready for bed. But somewhere close by you can bet there is a group of people packing up the last load. Yes, those faithful volunteers. Some had been there early to set up in the bitter cold, but never complained. Others were gathering items to pack away for the next event. All still smiling. All excited, full of endless energy, and, my favorite, planning on how to make next year’s event “EVEN BETTER!”  I am in awe and forever humbled by these amazing individuals.

So, it was especially hard to be at (too many) funerals recently of volunteers who gave so much of themselves. Trailblazers, cheerleaders, committed, loyal and always for the good of others. I remember standing in line at the grocery store, when I turned around to see one such volunteer. His cart was filled with potatoes that he and his wife were going to cook, peel, and prep for an upcoming fundraiser. It needed to be done, so of course he volunteered. Seems so simple doesn’t it.

If you treaded out into the snowstorm for a charity event and the lights were already on at the center when you got there, you can thank one of these volunteers. They were flipping pancakes at the Spring fundraiser. They were at the front of the Summer parade. They were directing traffic at the annual Fall event. They were making things from scratch to ensure that all the money raised went to the right cause. Knowing who is reading this, I have many of you to thank as well!

At this time of year I think of how I can contribute. As I reflect, I am reminded of the many volunteers who showed me what it means to truly give…of time, energy, and of themselves. They taught me something else, too: that the season of giving and volunteering lasts way beyond the holidays. It is a gift. One to share with others all year long!
