The Front Door: Serving as a Backdrop for the First Day of School since 1925
Okay, so I’m not exactly sure about the year. But I do know that many of us enjoy using our home as the ultimate backdrop for this important occasion: the first day of school. Is there any better feeling than that first day? The promise of a fresh year and the adventure that awaits! But why the photo? Your older children would probably say it’s just another way for parents to embarrass their kids. Maybe so. Whatever the reason, these photos certainly tell a great story, don’t they? The progression of height, style, braces or no braces, addition of cute puppies, proud little brothers and sisters.
To get the true essence, I went back to my own “first day of school” poses. I admit there wasn’t one for every single year (ahem). Still, I’m sure my siblings can attest that I was likely out on the front stoop, waiting for the photo shoot to begin. (I loved the first day of school!) As I flipped through the album, I also enjoyed photos from other milestones over the years—Halloween costumes, proms, basketball uniforms, weddings, heading off to college, and so much more. Something stood out: of all the changes over the years, there was one constant: the backdrop of our home, The Front Door. Standing strong, steady, inviting, welcoming. As if its arms were wrapped around us, guiding us through many of life’s “firsts.” (now I’m getting teary-eyed!).
Hopefully, you’ve made it through these initial few weeks of school. As the routines settle in, here’s to an amazing year ahead—one filled with the magic of kids, big and small, running through the front door with a joyful, ‘I’m hoooome!’”
